Taking stock -

Learning fusion was fun, constraints are really powerful, but they work against you if your datum is wrong (or moving in the hole as you measure 😖)

Being able to quickly and consistently print very thin test pieces is a game changer.

Approach that eventually worked was to disassemble the whole thing, rather than measuring from the bolt-heads - actually bolt the token against the part through the known bolt locations (once they were right.) Start with way bigger holes than needed (especially around the posts) and tighten down incrementally as everything else locates properly.

Also - minimal constraints first - add them to position elements as needed.

And don’t treat a wonky head location as a datum point.

And this little shit is the precise cause of much of that repetition… off-centre bolt hole means - bolt head that moves around 😖


Measure twice, print once? Measure twice, print, swear, repeat…


First job - get this off! Everything will be mounted on the x-carriage


Project! Ender->Plotter

I’ve got an old Ender 3V2 which has been sadly redundant since is went Bambu. But I don’t want to throw it away. It was a fun gadget for a while, and taught me a lot about 3d printing - most of which was how much I don’t want to spend time messing around with printers so much as I actually want to build stuff.

So - I’m going to build a simple plotter to keep it alive, and learn stuff.

“rules” for the project -

  • As much as possible designed and printed by me - I’m ok with OpenSCAD, and learning Fusion
  • No using other people’s models/end results directly - this is about learning, not assembling.
  • Re-use where possible, but not to the point of insanity.
  • This is more about learning than the end-result.
